In 1849 the first LDS branch was organized in Herriman with Ezra T. Benson as president of the branch. In 1851 John Christensen became the first settler in Herriman, arriving in the Salt Lake Valley with Brigham Young in July 1847. The town was settled by many Danish converts when it was part of South Cottonwood (later Murray) and remained predominantly Danish when it became part of Murray when that city was incorporated in 1913. In 1915 a consolidation of the South Cottonwood and Murray school districts gave the Herriman area a single school, which continued through the late 1970s. In 1943 two LDS stakes, the Murray and Herriman wards, were disorganized as part of a Churchwide effort to reduce the number of stakes. In 1945 South Cottonwood Ward was organized from parts of Herriman and Murray Wards with Ira J. Condie as bishop. By 1951 over 60% of South Cottonwood Ward's population lived in Herriman. In 1974 Herriman was incorporated as a city to better administer services such as fire protection and public works. The ward was divided into two wards in 1976: North Herriman with Max H.
